CONSERVATION IN THE NEWS

March 26, 2011 - Missouri Private Landowner Protection Act has been introduced to the Missouri House and Senate.  SB 119 has been heard by committee and approved.  It awaits a hearing on the Senate Floor.  HB 597 has been assigned to the Tourism and Natural Resources committee; no date has been set for a hearing.

The Missouri Private Landowner Protection Act will provide additional protections to property owners regarding current and future decisions on the use of their property.  It recognizes private, non-profit organizations, such as land trusts,  to hold conservation easements.  The Act provides greater clarity and certainty on the legal framework for voluntary, private agreements that protect land owners and land trusts.

Conservation easements have become popular with land owners, especially farmers and ranchers, as a best economic option to ensure their children have the opportunity to continue the family tradition.  Conservation easements provide another option to land owners who desire to maintain the property for specific, desired purposes.
